Water Chemistry Monitoring

About the project

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Our amazing volunteers have been busy collecting water chemistry data using a YSI multiparameter portable sonde.  In more sensible language, a handy little device with four sensors that measure dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, and nitrate levels in the river. These readings help us understand what’s happening beneath the surface and how healthy our rivers really are.

Most of the sampling takes place from bridges or other easy-to-reach spots, and volunteers aim to record their results about once a month.

In 2025, we recorded around 300 readings across 38 different sites, with regular sampling since February. That’s a fantastic effort for our first year of water chemistry monitoring.  It’s all thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers. The data we’ve gathered is already helping to build a valuable picture of river health around the Duddon locally.
