Duddon Mosses National Nature Reserve

Duddon Mosses, Foxfield, Duddon Estuary

About

Duddon Mosses is a Natural Nature Reserve, a system of raised mosses/mires at the head of the Duddon Estuary and one of England’s few remaining peatland habitats. It is a haven where bog plants (some nationally rare and distinctive) such as bog mosses (Sphagnum), cotton grasses and the carnivorous sundew can thrive. You’ll also see Rhododendron is creeping in in some places. On three sides the mosses are surrounded by a belt of broadleaved trees including Birch and beech and wildlife to be seen includes deer, adders, lizards, frogs, small mammals and in the winter time waders and pink-footed geese. Additionally as well as gazing on the far reaching views over the Lake District Fells theres also the possibility of seeing birds of prey such as the buzzard and barn owl.
