Swinside Stone Circle

Close to Swinside Farm, Millom, LA18 5LD

About

Swinside Stone Circle was originally known as Sunkenkirk, which was part of a megalithic tradition that lasted from 3300 to 900 BC, archaeologists categorise this period as the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages. It is one of the best preserved stone circles in the county. The circle consists of approx 55 stones and sits at the foot of Black Combe, close to Duddon Bridge, Broughton in Furness. There is a well-defined entrance on the south-east side, where two portal stones stand outside the circumference. The tallest stone of the circle is 2.3m (7ft 6ins) high and it weighs about 5 tons and it stands almost exactly at the north the the circle. The stone circles were thought to be designed for ritual or ceremonial purposes. To reach the site, the visitor must get to Crag Hall, where there are limited places for parking, and then walk along a rough track for 2¼ km (1¼ miles) uphill towards Swinside Farm, the megalithic ring lies to the right.
