Growing Together in the Duddon Valley

Nestled beside the Kepplewray Trust and Broughton-in-Furness Primary School, the Sustainable Duudon Community Orchard is a thriving local project that blends environmental care with community spirit. Dick Palmer from South Lakes Orchard Group (SLOG) helped with the planting scheme and advised on the general orchard maintainance.

Why It Matters

Community orchards like ours offer more than just fruit:

  • Fresh, local produce reduces food miles and supports healthy eating.
  • Wildlife-friendly spaces boost biodiversity and attract pollinators.
  • Shared activities like planting and harvesting build stronger community bonds.
  • Climate resilience through carbon capture, shade, and water management.

Involving Young People

  • Pupils from Broughton Primary helped plant an edible hedge donated by the Woodland Trust.
  • In the first year, they also harvested apples from our first 12 trees to use in school desserts!
  • The orchard doubles as a nature learning space.

Coming Soon: Apple Pressing Day

We’re planning a community apple pressing event in late September or early October 2026, once the trees are fully established. Everyone’s invited to join in!
